Top or Bottom Night Guard: Which is Better for Teeth Grinding?

Should You Get a Top or Bottom Night Guard?

Quick answer: Both work equally well. The choice comes down to your specific situation, what feels comfortable, and any existing dental work you have. One isn't more effective than the other.

What Research Shows

Studies on full-coverage night guards show similar results for symptom relief whether they're made for your upper or lower teeth. That means you can choose based on what fits better, your existing dental work, and what feels most comfortable to wear.

Our Standard Recommendation

If you're not sure and don't have any special considerations, go with a top guard. It usually stays in place better and protects your visible front teeth from wear.

When to Choose a Bottom Guard Instead

A bottom guard makes more sense if you have veneers or recent dental work on your upper teeth that you want to protect, if your upper teeth are less stable or you're missing some upper teeth, or if you have a strong gag reflex and find lower appliances easier to tolerate.

Many people also prefer bottom guards for daytime wear because they're less noticeable when talking or working.

Special Situations That Need Different Solutions

If snoring or sleep apnoea is your main concern, you'll need a mandibular advancement device rather than a standard night guard. This requires proper assessment by a professional.

If your jaw clicks or locks because of disc displacement, a different type of splint might be needed after a clinical review.

Our Night Guard Options

Night Guard — 3mm soft EVA material, available for top or bottom arch. Perfect for nighttime teeth grinding and clenching.

Day Guard — 2mm soft EVA material for lighter daytime clenching, available for top or bottom arch. Less bulky for wearing during the day.
